Time-Saving Tricks and Treats from Google

Google is Treating us with a Few Time-Saving Tricks

Here are a few updates from Google that can make your work more efficient and save you some time.

#1 - New Shortcuts
Google recently added shorter time-saving tricks to create docs, forms, sheets, sites and slides. Simply go to your URL (omni box) and type in one of these urls:

Docs: doc.new, docs.new, document.new
Forms: form.new, forms.new
Sheets: sheet.new, sheets.new, spreadsheet.new
Sites: site.new, sites.new, website.new
Slides: slides.new, deck.new, presentation.new

#2 - Whose Viewing My Google Docs?
The activity dashboard in Google Docs, Sheets and Slides is getting a new look (interface). If you haven't used the activity dashboard yet, it is a way to check to see who has viewed a file and when they viewed it. To view the activity dashboard, open a file and click on Tools and then on Activity Dashboard. The new look will make it easier to find data and to collaborate with others.

#3 - Finish a Google Form Later!
When using Google Forms, if a person is in the middle of filling out the form, there is no way to save the information and come back to it later. Here is a work around that I have used. I turn on "edit after submit" in the settings and then the student can come back and work on the form later. I also turn on the option to send the student a copy of their responses so that the information is recorded in an email. One additional step I recommend is to add a question at the end, "Are you finished with this form? Yes or No, I will edit my response later. That way, you can start giving feedback for students who are actually done.

#4 - No More Copy and Paste
The Explore feature in Google Docs and Slides makes it simple to search for Google Drive files related to whatever you’re currently working on. Now, users can view images and charts in those files—right from within the Explore panel—and insert them quickly and easily into their document or presentation. When you open the Explore panel, you will soon see three tabs; Cloud Search, Web and Images. Under Cloud Search you will be able to add images and charts directly from your docs, slides and sheets. This will be a huge time saver from having to copy and paste images and charts.

Hopefully these time-saving "Tricks" will be a "Treat" for you in the near future.
