Sparta's Tech Boot Camp Experience

Image
This week I was a presenter at Naomi Harm's Mobile Literacy Boot Camp in Sparta, WI.  Kudos to Naomi and Jeff Harm for putting together this Technology Camp.  I can only imagine what it took to make this happen.  It was truly an amazing experience for many educators. As a presenter, one of my sessions was on the topic of Flipped Teaching.  This is such a hot topic right now in education.  I was more than ready to share the pedagogy and benefits of using Flipped Instruction in a classroom. My Presentation: I made sure to include plenty of personal stories  engaging videos a video directly from our classroom a backchannel to "hear" from my audience digital tools to add to our digital toolbox examples of flipped videos time to work with the tools and practice making videos The feedback I received from the audience was so positive and energizing.  One success story I just have to share is about these three lovely teachers: After l...

My SLATE 2012 Flipped Learning Experience

Image
Two Rock Stars! Kristin Daniels and Wayne Fellers were the presenters at the SLATE Conference.  They presented a Flipped Learning Workshop that I helped to facilitate.   Kristin and Wayne are Technology Integration Specialists in Stillwater, MN.  They are such amazing people and I was beyond impressed with their knowledge and above all their dedication to helping the staff of teachers in their district to implement a Flipped Learning initiative.   The initiative began with a few 5th grade classrooms and has now expanded to 25 classrooms from the elementary classrooms into the Middle School.   The Workshop: The day started with an overview of what a Flipped Classroom looks like.  Next, I was joined by three other educators in a question and answer panel.  Kaye Henrickson, a Technology Coach and Jody Volkman, a physics teacher were among the panel.  We answered questions from the audience regarding what we are doing to flip the lessons in ...

SLATE Conference

Image
Today I am helping to facilitate an all day workshop at the SLATE Conference in Wisconsin Dells.  I am helping out in the afternoon in an Edcamp style set up.  The workshop is on the Flipped Classroom and Flipped Learning. Click here to see the website and description. I have written about the Flipped Classroom before.  Currently I am flipping my math class each day.  My co-teacher and I have made our spelling class a hybrid class where some of the content and lessons are on a Google Site.   Click here to see some Flipped Spelling videos that go with my spelling class.  I also occasionally flip a lesson in science, language or reading as well. In order to flip a lesson, I first have to choose the platform that I want to use to create a video.  My favorite is the Educreations app on my iPad.  I also really like Screenr if I want to make a video on my laptop.  Making the videos has become quite natural to me and I actually enjoy the p...

Ted Ed

Image
You may have noticed that Ted.com has become a very popular site.   Ted.com is all about providing news and information on technology through videos, blogs etc.  One area of Ted.com is Ted Ed which uses engaging videos to create customized lessons.  After watching the video below, I could see the amazing potential for Ted Ed in any Elementary, Middle, or High School Classroom.   Imagine being able to customize a lesson that includes a video of your choice,  a quick quiz, open answer questions, and additional references.  You can even make your own video and create a lesson for that video.  I'm totally on board with this kind of "Flipped Classroom" approach.  I know my students would be excited about this as well. Here is the short Ted Ed Website Tour Video that shows how making these Flipped Lessons works. The only stumbling block is that the video platform used for Ted Ed is You Tube and this is blocked to the students in our dist...
